Our Little Nudie

It had to happen sometime... Some nudie shots of Cyanne pre-bath.
She LOVES her bath time. Say "splash splash" and she smiles and squeals with glee.

Close-ups of C.

Here are a few close-ups of Cyanne taken a couple of weeks ago.
Plus, she's decided that one super fun thing to do is to take our soda cans out of the dispenser, chew on them, and then roll them all over our uneven floor. Much fun... Especially when we go to open them later on...

Our little 'blue eyes.'

Fresh Fig Tart & Summer Produce

I had a great desire the other week to 1) make use of our amazing, fresh produce from the ranch and 2) to bake. These melded together when I made a Fig Tart with rosemary cornmeal crust filled with a mascarpone lemon cream... We have three trees that produce amazing, sweet green figs.

It turned out rather pretty, so I took a few photos.

Here is an extra photo of some other great produce we've collected as of late: Pomegranates, bell peppers, jalapenos, and tomatoes.

Gap Fire - July 3, 2008 (Part II)

Here are more photos during the Gap Fire.
Tom took these when he returned to the house Thursday afternoon to collect more of our belongings before we left for the East Coast Friday morning.

This shot is taken on Fairview - looking towards the hills. If you look towards the mountains on the right hand side, you can see some flames.

A shot of a police car blocking off Glen Annie Road. This is the intersection closest to our house - Glen Annie and Cathedral Oaks Road.

A shot of the sign for the entrance to La Patera Ranch, owned by David Van Horne with whom I work. None of his ranch was burned but they were manning the lines and used his property as a staging area both for helicopter take-off/landing and refueling as well as a location for fire crews. The second shot shows a line of fire trucks exiting La Patera Ranch.

A shot of the sun from our backyard. The ash is covering the sun.

Driving towards Los Carneros from our house. That is not cloud cover. That is ash.

Views of orchards off of Cathedral Oaks Road as well as a shot of our house.

Photos taken from my parent's deck in Hope Ranch. The sky was this incerdible, eerie orange. There is a sliver of clear sky on the horizon beneath the clouds of ash.
When Tom was taking these photos, I was at the Secord's house and went outside once to get something from the car. Ash was raining down - it was incredible.
This was when the fire was in full swing.

The following photos were taken by Greg Lawler. Some incredible shots of the fire...

Press/Media Coverage.

The human-caused fire started on Tuesday, July 1, 2008 in the Lizard's Mouth area along West Camino Cielo. It burned 9,443 acres and destroyed 4 outbuildings, but no homes. The fire was contained on Monday July 28th, 2008.

Cyanne's 1st Birthday Party - September 27th

Cyanne celebrated her first birthday on Saturday, September 27th.
It was a beautiful, warm, sunny day though thankfully not too hot (a la post-baptism!).
We were joined by lots of wonderful family and friends.

Cyanne gets slicked by both Lucky and Caddy... She tries to turn her head or move out of the way... Not fast enough! She got lots of puppy kisses that afternoon.

Cyanne's babysitter, Erin, stopped by for a quick birthday hello.

Time for ice cream cake!

She really did seem to like it... Really!

Cyanne, Mommy & her great grandmother - Lillian/Nanny.

Cyanne and her buddy, Cielle. Practicing standing...

Happy 1st Birthday Cyanne!!!
Here's to a wonderful year to come and many more happy birthdays!

Someone new, something broken, and a 10 year anniversary

First - Congratulations Jenny & Ryan!! Welcome to the world little Devo Ryan Gantz!!! Though not so little really, because at 9 lb 5 oz, he was the opposite of little Cyanne who was 5 lb 9 oz! =)
The 8th of October was a wonderful day.
Devo decided to come out and join the rest of us and we celebrated my parents' 32nd wedding anniversary.

Second - as for the something broken... It is amazing how you become accustomed to certain things. Attached to certain devices. Reliant on technology and all of its wonders and mysteries. Well, we are sad to report that our DVR has bit the dust. It no longer functions and we get this nasty error message when we try to encourage it to go. So, not only have we lost all of the things we recorded (i know, i know - no momentous loss but still... I was totally looking forward to watching my Hills, Giada, and old LOST episodes) but we have to wait 5-8 business days to get a replacement! Whatever happened to overnight shipping? I know it exists. We have the Red Sox Series coming up... hightly entertaining Daily Shows, as well as Saturday Night Live and as you all know, since we can't stay up past 9:30 PM anymore - we are very reliant on said DVR.
So... what to do... I suppose we'll either just miss shows or stay up late. But anyway - we were amused and slightly frightened by how much we've grown to rely upon the DVR and the fun capabilities. Being able to rewind and fast forward the television is something we've certainly come to take for granted.

Third - I'd just like to give a little shout-out to my car. It was TEN years ago this month that my parents surprised me with my lovely, "desert dune" colored Toyota 4-Runner. (As an aside - that means it was 10 years ago that we were enjoying our senior year of college!?!!!?) He joined me in Middlebury, Vermont. He's had quite a well-traveled 10 years. Starting out life in Middlebury, moving to Boston, zipping around all of the maze-like streets of Boston and Cambridge, dozens and dozens of trips on the Mass. Turnpike driving to Albany and Thompson's Lake, a trip across the country, and now life in sunny Southern California. I'd imagine he'd say life has improved as he dosn't have to have ice scraped off, salt sprayed away, or frozen tires several months out of the year. Instead, we get sun, basic dirt, and a good dose of ash from all of the fires...

At any rate - a wonderful new addition - yay Devo! And yay to Mommy Gantz for doing such an incredible job during delivery - as well as DVR revelations and an anniversary for both the car - and my parents.

(oh and I promise - fewer words and more pictures to come. Soon!!!)

Fever

Cyanne had one of her first fevers yesterday and last night.
I think it was more than just the 'Indian Summer' we are experiencing, as well. (It was in the 80's and 90's yesterday).

I picked her up from daycare at 4:30 and she was hot. Hot, hot, hot. Pink, flushed cheeks. Seemed to be in a daze (which is very unlike her)... She was quiet in the car where normally she's very chatty, talkative, and sing-song like.

So, I took her home and took her temperature which was 102.5 - and that was for as long as she'd let me hold the thermometer under her arm (i.e. not the full, recommended 90 seconds).
We then proceeded to take a cool bath. This was met with a little protest - once she felt the water, that is. She LOVES her bath time. This time, however, it was not the warm water she was used to... I kept pouring cold water over her head and body in the hopes it would cool her down.

It did - and she eventually got used to the water. However, she was still pretty hot.
We gave her some Tylenol and let her sleep in just a onesie... She was also stuffy and couldn't breathe out of her nose when I went into calm her when she woke up around 10.

It's such a sad sight: her eyes still closed because she's so sleepy (oh yeah, there had only been one 30 minute nap ALL day yesterday - she normally takes 2, each an hour duration or more...), nose making these stuffy sounds, and then her little mouth open, breathing, with dried patched around her lips because her mouth is so dry from breathing in and out while sleeping.

She did manage to sleep through most of the night though, for which Tom & I were very thankful. She started waking up around 5:30, so I snuck in and put one of my fleece jackets over her - as it had cooled down in the room quite a bit. I didn't dare touch her to see if she was still hot or she would've immediatley woken up. So, she slept for another 45 minutes or so...

Still - not a fun experience. I just hope it was a temporary, short-term thing and that we don't have something worse on the way... She seemed pretty happy this morning though. Amazing what a decent night sleep will do.
