Zoo Visit - Princess Day

We took Cyanne to the zoo on the 16th of May. It was their annual "Princesses Day."
We arrived a wee late for most of the princess-y festivities but frankly, she's still a little young for most of it anyway.

We did get her to sit with the "Princess." As you can see, this was met with similar response to her trips to Santa et al...

I honestly think the girl felt badly about it but I kept telling her it wasn't her fault. Not only is Cyanne not a huge lap-sitter but she's also not yet one for costumes. I'm sure that will change.

Cyanne had a blast looking at all of the animals - she really loves going to the zoo now.
The big cats were all sleeping. She'd see them sleeping, point at them, and then do her sign for 'asleep' or 'sleeping.' Very cute.

She fed the pigs and goats with my Mom. She was braver than I sticking her little fingers through the wire fence. Those pigs and goats took it right out from her fingers! She'd look surprised but keep going back for more food to feed them.

She also had fun riding the little train at the zoo - the mini one... We decided we would come back and go on their 'real' train when the line wasn't so long!!

All in all - a fun outing to the zoo. Princess day and all.

Jesusita Fire

As many of you know, the Jesusita Fire started on May 5th around 1:45 PM in Santa Barbara. It has been a harrowing few days. At the height of the fire, upwards of 50,000 people were either under mandatory evacuation (30,500) or were in an evacuation warning area (29,000). The warning area stretched all the way to Fairview in Goleta which is close to our house to Hot Springs Road in Montecito. That covers pretty much all of Santa Barbara.

An incredible view of the foothill on fire with the city in the foreground. You can tell just how low into Mission Canyon and other canyons it came to downtown Santa Barbara:

The sundowner winds whipped up Wednesday and especially Thursday evenings pushing the fire laterally across the SB foothills. It jumped Highway 154 (San Marcos Pass), moving west, fueled by winds in excess of 60 mph and temperatures in excess of 100 degrees (at night).

Tom and I walked down our driveway and up Cathedral Oaks Thursday night. It was so, so scary. We could see a WALL of fire in the mountains and extending down to the flatter areas.
It was incredible. It was hot. Ashy. Smoky. And very, very windy. We knew the fire was moving rapidly both west (towards us) and east. Let's just say that I did not sleep well that night and kept all phones near us and on in case we received a reverse 911 call telling us to evacuate.

The conditions the firefighters had to deal with were horrible and quite likely the worst possible conditions in which to fight a wildfire.

The fire chief stated that this fire was the worst emergency that SB County has had to deal with in over a "quarter century." It required more resources, personnel, tools etc., than any other emergency.

A stark juxtaposition: A surfer walking along Butterfly Beach in Montecito, palm trees in the distance as well as the growing smoke cloud which covered the sun.

An AP shot of Dan David who is an attorney in my office - his home was very, very near the fire. Apparently, the two large trees bracketing his home totally burned. The firefighters saved his home by literally standing in his driveway/front door with hoses. He is one of the lucky ones.

It was what I'd imagine being in a war-zone is like in terms of the air power. We had "fixed-wing" air craft as show in the below photo flying, we had helicopters flying dropping water. There were also numerous media helicopters. We had the DC-10 come in and drop 12,000 pounds of fire retardant on the ridge tops. I have to say, watching that aircraft maneuver along the hilltops was an incredible site.

These are still making drops today - even though the fire is much more contained.

A helicopter doing a water drop over a home with the fire in the background.

Another shot of the hills on fire and the city in the foreground:

A very eerie, surreal view of the SB Mission. Wednesday afternoon, the winds really picked up and the sky became this orange color.

We are incredibly fortunate. Many others lost their homes or had homes who were heavily damaged.

We did pack up a bag and got together a few piles of irreplaceable items. Cyanne would be happy to know that I did grab her baby book. It's stuffed with mementos and not yet even technically begun but it's all there.... She certainly wouldn't care now - we'd have had to grabbed her puppy and blanket as most important objects for her - but she'd care later on if we lost her book.

Here are some shots of the incredible, amazing firefighters. I cannot even begin to comprehend the environment in which they work. They battle fire each day. And after watching this one, and the other 3 we've had since we moved back here, I now regard fire as a very dangerous creature. It moves and builds and grows and strikes. It licks up a ridge and runs down the other side. It is an animal, a beast with immense power and a total mind of its own. I would not like it as my adversary and therefore, my respect for firefighters grows more and more the more I begin to understand just how dangerous fire really is.

The wind was whipping so strongly - you can see the embers flying all around. These embers created many "hot spots" or "spot fires" and ended up burning homes further down the canyons, away from the main wall of fire.

Here's a view of the 101 freeway at the Fairview exit. The traffic is heading south. You can see just how large the fire was becoming at this point. The cloud is basically covering all of Santa Barbara.

A seemingly more and more frequent California scene: Fire and palm trees.

A team of firefighters navigating down a steep, burned-out canyon. It looks like a charred moonscape.

This made me smile... The firefighters apparently stopped to feed some friendly, brave bluejays in the Goleta area.

The remains of a burned home.

Again, we are very, very thankful and glad we, our pets, and our house are okay. We're very sad to hear about some friends or friends of friends who have lost their homes. Our hearts go out to them.

Fires were not this common when I was growing up here. I only remember one fire - the Painted Cave fire in 1990 (which burned in excess of 500 homes and traveled from the mountains to the ocean in under 30 minutes fueled by sundowner winds).

I hope we have a period free of fires.
I am no fan of fire.

A Night Out

Last night, Tom & I had a fun evening out. A treat in general and an even bigger one as it was "on a school night..." =)

Erin arrived to watch Cyanne at 6. I'd just like to say how much we adore Erin. She's the world's best babysitter for so many reasons... Cyanne loves her too, which is the best part.

But, she arrived, got the low-down, and we then passed off the babe to her. She immediately started her excellent diversionary tactics (though Cyanne doesn't even cry when we leave her with Erin) and we hopped in the car.

We had a fun (but rushed) dinner at a new place in town called The Melting Pot. It's huge! It would be fun to go there when we have more time or with a group of friends but still - it has one of my favorites things on the planet.
Melted cheese.
Repeat - melted cheese...

So, we had some yummy fondue (though taster Tom said it could've been 'tarter and with more zip.').
Again, melted cheese and therefore, hard to beat.
And salads. We unfortunately didn't have time for their chocolate fondue. Another reason to venture back!

But - the main event of the evening was a lecture by Bill Bryson. I'd bought these tickets for Tom for Christmas. I was telling him that when I purchased them last November, April 14th seemed so far away... and yet, here it was.

We arrived at the Granada and thoroughly enjoyed the lecture/readings. He was hysterical!! And very interesting. It made me want to read all of his books, too. He was one of those people who you meet and think they'd be great to have as a friend - or at least, to be able to invite to dinner...

After the show, we treated ourselves to some tasty gelato at Spoon. It was freezing outside (you east coasters, please refrain or hold your snickers) as it was SUPER windy. I loved it but I could've had an additional layer (or two) of clothes on...

So, what's the best thing to do in conditions like that? Get something freezing to eat! Yay!

So... we each got some gelato (me: coconut (heavenly) and honey fig marscarpone (tasty, interesting...); tom: amaretto (excellent), mint chip (good, but traditional)) and then ran to the car in the wind to battle the others trying to exit from the Granada parking lot.

Quite an enjoyable, fun evening. It felt great to be downtown and taking in a 'cultural' event.

So, all in all, a very nice night out.

We arrived home to find Cyanne, sound asleep in her bed. Clutching her puppy and her pink blanket.

18 Month Pediatrician Appt.

On Monday morning, Cyanne had a nice visit with Dr. Brennan for her 18 month check-up.

She did a good job though was not a fan of the stethoscope (perhaps it was chilly?) or the tool he used to examine her ears. Man, she was giving him the eye... Watching every single move he made. As he'd cross the room, she'd be either sitting in my or Tom's lap, watching his every step.
He certainly wasn't going to sneak up on her if she had anything to do with it!
It was a very "I'm watching you, Mister!" kind of expression...

Here are her most recent stats:
Head: 48 1/2 cm (95%) - our girl's still got a BIG noggin'!!
Height: 31 1/2" (50%)
Weight: 24 lb., 12 oz. (50%)

She had 2 shots. Got one. Cried. Got the second. Cried louder. And then, recovered fairly quickly. Poor girl... Oh, she holds on tight after those shots and puts her wet cheeks against yours. But, we went outside and the birds chirping immediately cheered her up.
Birds are her current obsession.

She's getting so big!
Tom & I are often struck by this fact but it just really hits us from time to time. Where did baby Cyanne go? As we were giving her a bath last night, she just seemed so big sitting there in the tub with all of her duckies and her dinos. I flipped her over so she could kick her legs in the water and she was so long...
Ah... time passes so quickly.

That, and our sitter Erin said last night that she looked quite different, even though it had only been a few weeks since she was last at our house. She said her face had changed and looked "older." I suppose this is what happens, right?

Also amazing - the next appointment I had to make was for October!! For her 2 yr. appointment!! Wow.

Good job, Cyanne!

Happy 18 Months, Cyanne!

We celebrated Cyanne's 18 month birthday today!
Amazing to think she's 18 months old!

Here are a few photos from the day:
(And my apologies, she was moving too quickly to get her to sit in the rocking chair for a comparison photo... we'll do it next month.)

Good Morning sunshine!!!

The daily ritual each morning: Throwing the vast majority of her stuffed animals out of her crib with gusto. Oh, it's a super fun game throwing them out, watching mommy pick them up and throw them back in, and doing it all over again!

Good Afternoon sleepyhead!!
A few photos after she woke up from her afternoon nap:

Her "birthday" present - a toy stroller. She LOVES it and has since been pushing it around constantly. (And no, we don't get her something each month... I'd just been meaning to get her one of these figured today would be a good day).

And, to top it off, we brought home a few cupcakes from "Crushcakes" to celebrate.
The frosting was a huge hit... and the cake, too.

Visit to the Zoo - March 14th

Cyanne, Tom & I visited the zoo recently one beautiful Saturday afternoon.

The gibbons were going nuts! This one guy was totally showing off, swinging from tree to tree. And he was way, way up towards the top of the eucalyptus tree. (Devon, I told Cyanne your story about when you knocked one of the gibbons unconscious when throwing a corn cob for them to eat when you were a zoo camp counselor... she's yet to fully appreciate the humor of the story. We'll tell her again later =))

Cyanne had a really good time looking at all of the animals - she especially enjoyed all of the birds. She's really into birds at the moment. She emphatically points and says "zzeessshhhh." What that means, I've no idea =). She points at the bird, opens her eyes wide, looks at you and nods as if to say, "you see the bird? the bird! right?!"

She also does the flapping arm/flying movement when she look at the birds.
She also had fun looking at the penguins and the turtles in the water area.

Meerkats and giraffes were also popular.

The lions were taking a 'cat' nap, snoozing in the sun ... so she couldn't really see them but I did manage to take a few photos:

It was amazing for us to see how much more interested she was this time than when we'd ventured there in mid-August. She was much more curious and interested in all of the animals.

As we now renewed our membership... we plan to spend lots of time at the zoo!

Happy 5th Anniversary!!

Happy Anniversary!!

Today, Tom & I celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary. Oh, how the time flies...
We've been friends since 1996, started dating in October of 1998 (almost 11 years!!), and were married 5 years ago today right here in Santa Barbara.

The last five years have been such a wonderful adventure. Getting married, honeymooning on Turtle Island, living and working in Boston, moving 3,000 miles across the country and putting down roots in Santa Barbara. Starting our life here, exploring and enjoying our "new" town, and
the biggest of all - starting a family.

Cyanne has been the best, biggest, and most amazing change to happen in the last 5 years and we can't imagine a single moment without her. We marvel at what our lives were like before she arrived. What we did and how we spent all of that free time is a total mystery to us now! And we wouldn't have it any other way. Each day brings a new surprise, adventure, word, gesture, smile or laugh. It's hysterical, entertaining, and amazing all at the same time. It makes us realize how much we love each other but even more so, how much we love (no, make that adore...) Cyanne.

We are truly blessed to have such a wonderful, incredible, too-cute-for-words, independent daughter.

I am truly blessed to have such an incredible, loving, caring and supportive husband. I could not ask for a better friend, partner, and soul mate. I love this journey we're on and look forward to every new day and experience.

So, on that note - a famous poem but a good one nonetheless:

To My Dear and Loving Husband (A. Bradstreet)

If ever two were one, then surely we.
If ever man were lov'd by wife, then thee;
If ever wife was happy in a man,
Compare with me ye women if you can.
I prize thy love more then whole mines of gold,
Or all the riches that the East doth hold.
My love is such that rivers cannot quench,
Nor ought but love from thee, give recompence.
Thy love is such I can no way repay,
The heavens reward thee manifold I pray.
Then while we live, in love let's so persevere,
That when we live no more, we may live ever.

xoxoxo, k.

Diaper Rash

First, you'll be thankful I have no photos to post with this entry... =)

Second, this is not such a very interesting topic to discuss on a blog, I know. However, since it is usually a blog regaling Cyanne's adventures, it seems somewhat relevant. That, and there's a funny story and a helpful mommy tip at the end.

Cyanne has been sporting quite the case of diaper rash, poor girl. It makes for very, very unfun diaper changes. We even just take her back and get her near her changing table and the waterworks begin. And oh, can she turn those faucets on. Quite impressive, actually.

So, that sent us to continue searching for the best diaper rash cream.

We've tried Desitin (my #2 favorite), A&D cream & ointment (pretty good), B's 'Butt Paste' cream (I had to buy this for the name alone (and also on Lara's recommendation); works well for the most part), Burts Bee's Cream (okay; smells like lavender), Aveeno Cream (so-so)... am I forgetting any? There must be more. Believe me, if it's out there, we have tried it.

Tom's first action is to check the percentage of zinc oxide in each cream. Though as we've come to learn, while that is helpful, it's not always the most helpful factor when combatting the evil diaper rash.

So, we asked Dr. Brennan who recommended.... Triple Paste!
I liked it from the get-go - I'll take anything that calls itself "paste" over "cream." (Though this is coming from the girl who'd take body butter over lotion 9 out of 10 times so not overly surprising.) Right there you know you've got a different type of product on your hands. (literally... ah, ha ha). Sorry.

However, it is slightly more challenging to find.
Tom ventured to Walgreens (another Dr. B tip) and located the mystery paste. He checked the zinc oxide percentages. Compared it to others we'd tried. Then, he made his way to the check-out. That was the only item he purchased.
The cashier rings it up and say "ohhhhh my!!" And looks at the item then looks at Tom. He says, "oh, is this a lady product? It is so expensive!"
$33 for a jar of diaper cream!
Apparently, said cashier was new to this country... however, I could just hear his voice saying "oh!, is this a lady product?" This, if you know me, greatly amused me...

Anyway - Tom then proceeded to tell him it was for babies and he said "oh... yes. Children are so costly..!" Ah, funny, funny. This amuses me most because of my image of Tom standing there with this man explaining that no, I did not send him on a lady product search but on a baby product mission.

So, after the entertaining purchase story, we were excited to try this new stuff.
Post-bath, all dry, and ready for bed, I gave Cyanne a good slather of the stuff. And let me tell you - it's some thick stuff! Off to sleep she went, triple pasted and hugging her 'puppy' with dreams of a rash-free bottom in her head.

In the morning - voila! Fantastic! She was just marginally pink. And two days later... it's basically gone.
I'm sold.
When the nasty rash appears, it's going to get the triple cream treatment!

So, just wanted to share the entertaining story as well as pass on a tip - if you need some awesome, highly effective diaper cream - this is it!

(I promise - more photos soon...) =)
